# Bolkiah absolute monarchy (Brunei) ## What this driver is [Bolkiah](/people/hassanal-bolkiah) absolute monarchy is one continuing domestic mechanism in Brunei: the sultan who has reigned since 5 October 1967, is prime minister since independence in 1984, gazetted the Syariah Penal Code Order 2013, brought its first phase into force on 1 May 2014 and its hudud phase on 3 April 2019, and on 4 June 2026 kept prime minister, defence, and finance while appointing sons to cabinet.
