# Monetary-Policy Tightness

## What this driver is

Monetary-policy tightness is the continuing stance of policy rates, balance-sheet runoff, and forward guidance as a meter, not a single hike. It is not a person and not a unique basis-point integer stored as size. The live title of this node is Monetary-Policy Tightness.

The driver is not [inflation-2021-23](/drivers/inflation-2021-23). That event bundle is the 2021–23 surge. This meter is the stance that answered it: Bank of England 16 December 2021, FOMC 16 March 2022, ECB 21 July 2022. Neighbouring files — [inflationary-pressure](/drivers/inflationary-pressure), [banking-system-stability](/drivers/banking-system-stability), [household-purchasing-power](/drivers/household-purchasing-power) — can move with this file. They do not replace it. It is not hung on [territorial-revisionism](/drivers/territorial-revisionism) (1918–45). It is not ukraine-war.

The attached time series uses Real interest rate (%) (FR.INR.RINR) as a disclosed proxy for 2020–2025. A real-rate series is not an FOMC statement, not an ECB TPI, and not a Bank Rate vote. Readers should treat it as lineage, not as the stance instruments themselves.

[Jerome Powell](/people/jerome-powell), [Christine Lagarde](/people/christine-lagarde), and Andrew Bailey are not published person nodes and are not minted here. [Joe Biden](/people/env-person-joe-biden) and [Mario Draghi](/people/mario-draghi) are live counterparts on neighbouring fiscal-and-national files, not chairs of these committees.

## Mechanism

Tightness moves through named channels.

First, policy-rate steps. On 16 December 2021 the Bank of England MPC voted 8–1 to raise Bank Rate to 0.25 percent (https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/monetary-policy-summary-and-minutes/2021/december-2021). On 16 March 2022 the FOMC raised the federal funds target range to 1/4 to 1/2 percent (https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/pressreleases/monetary20220316a.htm). On 21 July 2022 the ECB Governing Council raised the three key rates by 50 basis points and approved the Transmission Protection Instrument (https://www.ecb.europa.eu/press/pr/date/2022/html/ecb.mp220721~53e5bdd317.en.html). Those are completed acts. A unique later terminal-rate integer is not stored here as size.

Second, balance sheet. Quantitative tightening and the end of net asset purchases are a second instrument.

Third, transmission. Mortgage, corporate credit, and emerging-market dollar funding move with the stance, with lags.

Fourth, household incidence. Higher rates cool a CPI basket with a lag and raise debt-service now. That dual is criticism-first: 2021 “transitory” delay left households paying 2022 prices, then 2022–23 hikes added interest costs. household-purchasing-power is the neighbour.

Fifth, fragmentation. ECB’s TPI is a dated attempt to tighten without blowing a sovereign spread.

Timing is a meeting day and years of real-rate observations. A later genuine cut cycle is a new observation on this meter.

## Evidence base

The live proxy is World Bank real interest rate (FR.INR.RINR) (https://api.worldbank.org/v2/country/all/indicator/FR.INR.RINR?date=2020:2025&format=json&per_page=20000). Better evidence is the three central-bank decisions named above. IMF WEO chapters name the global tightening cycle without a unique later sacrifice-ratio stored here.

Evidence is strongest for the dated rate decisions. It is weaker for the claim that FR.INR.RINR is FOMC. It is weakest where a unique later unemployment integer is invented as size.

## Effect on welfare indicators

This meter, when it actually tightens, is a first-order channel into inflation cooling and into household debt-service, not into UCDP deaths.

- [Global consumer price inflation](/indicators/econ-global-consumer-price-inflation): direction lower with a lag when demand is the residual. Horizon: quarters to a few years. Confidence: medium. 2022 energy was a supply overlay; tightening does not uniquely own the later print.

A death path does not follow from an FOMC statement. Missing coefficients stay missing.

## Interactions and contested points

The meter interacts with inflation-2021-23 as the event it answered and with inflationary-pressure as the price meter. Reinforcement is a hike sitting on a 9-handle CPI print (the print lives on the BLS table, not here as size). Offsetting is a later cut.

The strongest competing view is that 2021 demand policy, not later tightness, is the story. Public Law 117-2 is a neighbouring fiscal act. This meter still stores the 2021–22 hike cluster. Those are not cancelled by a unique later fiscal-share coefficient that this page does not invent.

A second competing view is that this is only the Fed. BoE hiked first, in December 2021. ECB hiked in July 2022 with TPI. The meter is global stance, not a single chair.

Established: 16 December 2021 BoE; 16 March 2022 FOMC; 21 July 2022 ECB plus TPI; FR.INR.RINR as disclosed proxy. Not established: a unique terminal-rate or sacrifice-ratio as size, or minted pages for the three chairs. A later genuine cut is a new observation. It would not rename this meter as a technician success.
