# Inflationary Pressure

## What this driver is

Inflationary pressure is the continuing intensity of consumer-price increases as a meter, not a single peak print. It is not a unique 9.1 or 10.6 stored as size. Those prints live on BLS and Eurostat tables.

The driver is not [inflation-2021-23](/drivers/inflation-2021-23). That event bundle is the 2021–23 surge. This meter is the ongoing series: 2021 lift, 2022 peak cluster, 2023 cooling, later prints. They do not replace it. It is not hung on [territorial-revisionism](/drivers/territorial-revisionism) (1918–45). It is not ukraine-war, though ukraine-war and [sanctions-russia-2022](/drivers/sanctions-russia-2022) are 2022 energy neighbours.

The attached time series uses World Bank inflation, consumer prices (annual %) (FP.CPI.TOTL.ZG) as a disclosed proxy for 2020–2025. That series is a named table, not a unique Factrail coefficient. A higher normalized value means more inflationary pressure.

## Mechanism

Pressure moves through named channels.

First, goods and bottlenecks. 2021 reopening demand hit ports, chips, and freight.

Second, energy and food. 2022 TTF, diesel, and fertilizer-adjacent food prices after ukraine-war entered CPI baskets.

Third, services and rents. These lag.

Fourth, policy reply.

Fifth, household incidence. Headline CPI is an average. Energy and food weights hit lower-income baskets harder. Renters meet lagging shelter. This page does not invent a unique real-wage integer. A later “immaculate disinflation” slogan is not a rebate of 2022 grocery and heating bills.

Sixth, measurement. CPI, HICP, and PCE are different baskets. This meter uses the World Bank annual consumer-price series as a disclosed proxy. Revisions happen.

Timing is a monthly release and years of persistence. A later genuine target-consistent print is a new observation on this meter. It does not erase 2021–23.

## Evidence base

The live proxy is World Bank FP.CPI.TOTL.ZG (https://api.worldbank.org/v2/country/all/indicator/FP.CPI.TOTL.ZG?date=2020:2025&format=json&per_page=20000). BLS CPI-U monthly releases, including the 13 July 2022 release for June 2022 (https://www.bls.gov/news.release/archives/cpi_07132022.htm). Eurostat HICP. IMF WEO April 2022.

Evidence is strongest for the existence of a 2021–23 surge on those tables. It is weaker for a unique fiscal-versus-supply split. It is weakest where a later 2024 print is asked to prove that households were made whole. No unique peak percentage is copied here as Contribution.size.

## Effect on welfare indicators

This meter is a first-order channel into the CPI welfare series.

- [Global consumer price inflation](/indicators/econ-global-consumer-price-inflation): direction higher when this meter strengthens. Horizon: the same reporting year, with persistence. Confidence: high for the named table; medium for any single-channel attribution. The indicator is lower-is-better, so strengthening this meter is a negative welfare direction.

A death path does not follow from a CPI release. Missing coefficients stay missing.

The welfare sign of the driver is negative on household real incomes: completed price-level increases reduce purchasing power.

## Interactions and contested points

Reinforcement is a 2022 embargo and a peak print in the same year. Offsetting is a later base-effect cooling.

The strongest competing view is that the episode was almost entirely transitory supply. Bottlenecks were real. Later services persistence and the 2022 energy overlay are also real. It does not invent a unique split.

It does not. Those chairs are not published person nodes.

Established: FP.CPI.TOTL.ZG as disclosed proxy; BLS/Eurostat as edge tables; 2021–23 surge dual-homes to the event bundle. Not established: a unique peak print as size, a unique fiscal-share coefficient, or minted central-banker pages. A later genuine target-consistent print is a new observation. It would not rename this meter as a brochure.
