# Thongloun LPDR one-party (Laos) ## What this driver is Thongloun LPDR one-party is one continuing command mechanism in Laos: the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party general secretary since 15 January 2021 and president since 22 March 2021, re-elected in January–March 2026, who opened the Boten–Vientiane railway with [Xi Jinping](/people/env-person-xi-jinping) on 3 December 2021 and whose watch includes a closed [civic space](/drivers/civic-space) with unresolved disappearances and a 2026 roadside death of a critic after alleged arrest. It is a mechanism with dates, not Belt-and-Road tourism and not a Soviet repression row.
