# Woman Life Freedom protests in Iran

The Woman, Life, Freedom protests began after the death in custody of Jina [Mahsa Amini](/people/mahsa-amini) in September 2022 and became a nationwide challenge to compulsory veiling, gender discrimination, coercive policing, and broader restrictions on political and social freedom in Iran. The criticism-first record starts with the state's response: the UN fact-finding mission found gross human-rights violations in the context of the protests and concluded that many violations amounted to crimes against humanity, including murder, imprisonment, torture, rape and other sexual violence, persecution, enforced disappearance and other inhumane acts. The Mission also identified structural discrimination against women and girls as an enabling condition.

This driver is the protest movement and its continuing political pressure, not the repression itself. Repression belongs on [State Repression](/drivers/state-repression) and on the dated facts that document killings, arbitrary detention, torture, sexual violence, executions, Internet disruption, and legal enforcement. Keeping the movement and the coercive response distinct prevents Factrail from turning victims' resistance into the cause of the harms inflicted on them.

The movement's welfare path is primarily political voice. Public protest, refusal of compulsory dress rules, and collective organization can expand practical participation even when the state suppresses formal channels. That is why the driver should connect to [Having a say in government](/indicators/government-welfare-083-having-a-say-in-government). The edge is not a claim that Iran's national governance score improved after September 2022; it records the direction of the movement's mechanism, while the repression driver can simultaneously push the same or neighboring indicators in the opposite direction.

The evidence remains contested at the level of individual incidents and attribution, but the broad pattern is not an unsourced social-media narrative. The UN mission's 2024 update states that it had documented a credible figure of 551 people killed in connection with the protests, including women and children, alongside arbitrary detention, torture and sexual and gender-based violence. The same mission found no meaningful accountability for high-ranking officials. Those findings should be linked through dated Facts and Evidence, not converted into a single invented protest “score.”
