# Abu Dhabi hosts Eritrea–Ethiopia follow-on peace diplomacy after Asmara

## The fact

In July 2018, after the 9 July Asmara declaration, [Mohamed bin Zayed](/people/mohamed-bin-zayed-al-nahyan)’s Abu Dhabi hosted and financed follow-on Eritrea–Ethiopia diplomacy, including a widely reported meeting with Abiy and Isaias.

## Context

Abiy and Isaias signed in Asmara first. UAE money and aircraft were independently reported as part of the opening. He did not write the 9 July declaration. Later Tigray war with Eritrean forces is a neighbouring later file on Abiy’s row.

Asmara 9 July is Abiy/Isaias. Jeddah 16 September is Saudi-hosted.

The president of the United Arab Emirates is elected by the Federal Supreme Council of the seven emirates and is, in this case, also Ruler of Abu Dhabi and supreme commander of the armed forces. He does not write UNFCCC consensus texts by himself, IAEA operating licences, Israeli Knesset statutes, or UN panel reports.

## Significance

## What is established and what is not

Established: July 2018 Abu Dhabi-hosted follow-on Eritrea–Ethiopia diplomacy after Asmara, independently reported.

Not established: that UAE money was the unique cause of 9 July, or that later Tigray was thereby prevented.
