## The fact

On 9 February 2021 the UAE’s Hope (Al-Amal) probe successfully entered Mars orbit, the first Arab interplanetary science orbiter. [Mohamed bin Zayed](/people/mohamed-bin-zayed-al-nahyan) was the political principal of the space programme.

## Context

The Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre built and operated the probe with US university partners. Dubai’s ruler’s name is on the centre. Abu Dhabi’s president-to-be owned federal space policy. He did not write NASA’s licence.
