# Herbert Weir Smyth’s Loeb Aeschylus volume I puts a facing-page English on a public library shelf

## The fact

In 1922 the Loeb Classical Library issued Smyth’s first [Aeschylus](/people/aeschylus) volume, Greek with English, covering plays in the received seven. It is not a fifth-century autograph and not the 2008 Sommerstein replacement.

## Context

Loebs freeze one Greek text and one English. They also put tragedy into municipal libraries. Authorship of Prometheus Bound remains disputed in the same series later.

Aeschylus is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

Established: Smyth’s Loeb Aeschylus I appeared in 1922. Not established: that it settled the text of Agamemnon or school outcomes that year.
