# Haqqani Network blamed for Kabul US Embassy and ISAF attack

Date: 2011

On 13 September 2011, armed attackers launched a prolonged assault in central Kabul, firing toward the US Embassy and NATO-led ISAF headquarters from a nearby building while other attacks struck security targets. US officials blamed the Haqqani Network. State Department material later described the network as responsible for the assault and said Afghan civilians were among those killed.

The event is attributed to the Haqqani Network at the organizational level. Public sources attribute the operation to the network; they do not show that [Sirajuddin Haqqani](/people/sirajuddin-haqqani) personally commanded it. That distinction prevents a leadership role from being converted into an unsupported claim of operational command. The attack still strengthened armed-conflict intensity because a coordinated assault reached the diplomatic and security centre of Kabul and caused deaths during a sustained firefight. The network's broader record and leadership are relevant context, but the fact itself states only what the cited authorities support.
