# English Dominican Summa prints II-II q.11 that relapsed heretics may be put to death

Date: 1920

## The fact

The English Dominican Fathers’ Summa, issued 1911–1922 and served at New Advent, prints II-II q.11 a.3: after two admonitions a heretic may be delivered to the secular arm to be put to death. The dated public English instrument is that translation. [Aquinas](/people/thomas-aquinas) did not type the 1920s HTML. The article is a rights-harm heading later cited in inquisition practice.

## Context

The text distinguishes first offenders from the relapsed and assigns the killing to secular power. That split did not protect the condemned. Later papal and royal courts used the heading. Do not invent a unique execution coefficient from this article alone.

Thomas Aquinas is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Official edition, Holy See, or archive page and an independent publisher independently describe this instrument.

Official or archival record: Summa Theologiae II-II q.11 — Heresy (https://www.newadvent.org/summa/3011.htm; New Advent).

## Significance

A printed licence for killing after admonition is a minority-rights harm path with high confidence on the text, medium on any one later pyre.

## What is established and what is not

Established as a dated public record of this instrument.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.

That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself. Confidence is stated on the impact path. A later English edition is not a recovered autograph.
