# Pius X’s Pascendi uses scholastic-Thomist orthodoxy against modernist historical method

## The fact

On 8 September 1907 Pascendi dominici gregis condemned ‘modernism’, requiring oaths and scholastic method. [Aquinas](/people/thomas-aquinas) is the heading of the required method, not the signer.

## Context

Anti-modernist oaths polarised clergy and scholars. Thomism as a police method is a reception harm distinct from thirteenth-century disputed questions.

Thomas Aquinas is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
