# Vatican public memory, including Raphael’s stanze, stages Leo I’s meeting with Attila as a city-saving audience

Date: 1980

## The fact

Musei Vaticani and Holy See pages present the Encounter of Leo the Great with [Attila](/people/attila) as a founding Roman story of papal diplomacy stopping a sack. The fresco is [Raphael](/people/raphael)’s workshop; the meeting is a received 452 tradition. Attila did not pose in the Stanza di Eliodoro.

## Context

Using a Hun king as the foil of papal rescue is polarising sacred history. Whether gold, famine, or Leo turned the army is disputed in modern histories. Do not store a miracle as a measured fact.

Attila is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Museum, UNESCO, or critical-edition pages and an independent publisher independently describe this instrument. No fifth-century autograph file is claimed.

Official or archival record: Vatican Museums (https://www.museivaticani.va/content/museivaticani/en.html; Musei Vaticani).

## Significance

A staged papal victory over a Hun king is a polarising memory path. Medium confidence on the meeting, low on supernatural cause.

## What is established and what is not

Established as a dated later public record of this tradition or site. Not established: a Hun headcount or a medical cause of death as original numbers.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, and museums are not converted into extra lifetime acts. The attached driver is [political-polarization](/drivers/political-polarization). The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself. Confidence is stated on the impact path. A later English edition is not a recovered autograph. If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
