# Fordham’s public Priscus excerpt publishes the envoy’s picture of Attila’s court

Date: 1996

## The fact

A public English teaching page at Fordham reprints Priscus’s account of a Roman embassy at [Attila](/people/attila)’s court, including banquet, gifts, and the king’s presence.

## Context

The fragment is our best near-contemporary prose, and it shows a court of extraction and fear as well as ceremony. Hun army totals in later retellings are not upgraded here.

Attila is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Fordham’s Priscus page and Britannica’s Attila article independently treat Priscus as the core narrative source.

Official or archival record: Fordham Sourcebook — Priscus at the court of Attila (https://sourcebooks.fordham.edu/source/priscus1.asp; Fordham University).

## Significance

A received court of gift and intimidation is a governance-harm path of medium confidence.

An envoy’s memoir is not a payroll. Do not invent troop totals.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Priscus’s embassy narrative is publicly taught in this English. Not established: a numbered Hun host or a stenographic 449 diary.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, and museums are not converted into extra lifetime acts. The attached driver is [institutional-corruption](/drivers/institutional-corruption). The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself. Confidence is stated on the impact path. A later English edition is not a recovered autograph. If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
