# The Robodebt Royal Commission delivers its final report

## The fact

On 7 July 2023 Commissioner [Catherine Holmes](/people/catherine-holmes) AC SC delivered the final report of the Royal Commission into the Robodebt Scheme, established by Letters Patent on 18 August 2022. The report called Robodebt a crude and cruel, unlawful mechanism. [Albanese](/people/anthony-albanese)’s government had commissioned the inquiry; the scheme itself was a Morrison-era Coalition instrument begun in 2015. It does not assign Morrison’s scheme to Albanese as unique authorship.
