# The James Lind Library publishes Ibn Sina’s Canon rules for assessing the effects of drugs

Date: 2007

## The fact

In 2007 the James Lind Library issued Nasser, Tibi and Savage-Smith’s commentary on Canon rules for testing simples: identity of the drug, testing in the natural state, and related conditions. The dated public instrument is that Library article, with a PMC twin. [Avicenna](/people/avicenna) did not file a 2007 protocol. The rules are a received heading for later trial talk, not a randomised-trial statute.

## Context

Rules on paper do not staff a regulator. They are still an observational-method path distinct from depletion. High confidence on the 2007 publication and on the Canon passage as transmitted.

Avicenna is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

The named official or archival page and the independent publisher independently describe this instrument.

Official or archival record: James Lind Library — Ibn Sina’s Canon: rules for assessing the effects of drugs (https://www.jameslindlibrary.org/articles/ibn-sinas-canon-of-medicine-11th-century-rules-for-assessing-the-effects-of-drugs/; James Lind Library).

## Significance

Printed drug-assessment rules are a health-capacity heading for later evaluation, not a modern agency.

Printed drug-assessment rules are a health-capacity heading for later evaluation, not a modern agency.

## What is established and what is not

Established as a dated public record of this instrument.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
