# The early Latin Canon incunables are large folios priced for faculties and rich houses

Date: 1473

## The fact

CERL’s ISTC records the Latin Canon medicinae in the Gerard of Cremona version printed from 1473 (Milan Lavagnia dated 12 February 1473; the Rusch Strasbourg issue after that February). The dated public bibliographic instrument used here is ISTC ia01417700. A five-book folio is not a cheap pamphlet. Access for a faculty or a prince is not access for a village barber.

## Context

Print also multiplies copies relative to manuscripts. Split that access gain onto the 1473 improving row.

[Avicenna](/people/avicenna) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

The named official or archival page and the independent publisher independently describe this instrument.

## Significance

An expensive medical folio is an inequality heading: knowledge priced as furniture.

An expensive medical folio is an inequality heading: knowledge priced as furniture.

## What is established and what is not

Established as a dated public record of this instrument.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
