# Bessent leads US side in Geneva trade deal with China

On 12 May 2025 the United States and China issued a joint statement after talks in Geneva, agreeing that each side would suspend 24 percentage points of its extra tariffs for an initial 90 days while keeping a 10 percent rate. The statement named Treasury Secretary [Scott Bessent](/people/scott-bessent) and trade representative [Jamieson Greer](/people/jamieson-greer) as the US representatives in a new mechanism for further talks with Vice Premier He Lifeng.
