Date: 2023

On 31 March 2023, at the CGT's 53rd congress in Clermont-Ferrand, Sophie Binet was unexpectedly elected secretary-general, succeeding [Philippe Martinez](/people/philippe-martinez), who had led the union for two terms since 2015. She became the first woman to head the union since its founding in 1895. Martinez's favoured successor, Marie Buisson, failed to win enough support.
