In the late 1920s–30s Italian state drainage of Lake Nemi recovered huge hulls labelled as Gaius’s pleasure ships, later destroyed in 1944. The dated public instrument is that recovery-and-publication. Industrial skill spent on floating palaces is a misallocation path in the received label.

## Context

Attribution of the hulls to Gaius is scholarly consensus with some doubt. Luxury ships can be both technological marvels and extraction.
