# Chopin publishes the Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op. 52

Date: 1843

## The fact

In 1843 [Chopin](/people/frederic-chopin)’s Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op. 52, was published as a single large piano work, dedicated to Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild, after the earlier ballades Opp. 23, 38, and 47 had already taught the title to the market. 52, not a cluster of all four ballades as one opus, and not a later scholarly graph of its form. He wrote the piece; the Rothschild dedication names a patron-pupil, not a co-composer. The row does not mint twins for Opp. 23, 38, or 47. Those are other print dates.

4 in F minor, Op. 52 (1843-01-01).

## Context

A ‘ballade’ without sung words was still a young public title in the 1840s. Op. 52 asks a domestic pianist to hold a long argument, which is why it is stored as education rather than as a nationalist speech. The Heroic Polonaise of the same years is a different title and a different welfare path. Nohant quiet is production context, not the colophon. Do not treat later competition mandatory lists as 1843. Do not treat Mickiewicz’s literary ballads as this plate, even where listeners heard a poem behind the piano. Op. 52 is a shop object with a named dedicatee; it is not a lecture on ballad metre and not a set with the three earlier ballades bound as one legal opus.

52 on 1843-01-01. Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## Evidence and sources

The Institute’s works catalogue dates Op. 52 and the dedication. The Cambridge Companion independently treats the ballades as published large-form works with separate opus histories. Official: https://chopin.nifc.pl/en/chopin/dziela. Independent: https://doi.org/10.1017/ccol9780521404907. The records establish 1843 print of Op. 52. They do not establish a unique later analysis-citation series as a welfare outcome.

## Significance

Improving education path: a difficult public piece circulated as a score people could buy and study. High confidence on the opus year. Modest weight: one ballade is not a conservatory reform. Literary nationalism around the title stays in reception unless a specific 1843 text is cited; it is not added as a second Fact.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Do not collapse four ballades into one Fact or split Op. 52 into twins. Mixed effects of Chopin publishes the Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op. 52 are separate paths.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Op. 52 was published in 1843 as Chopin’s fourth ballade. Not established: that it uniquely caused a later narrative-piano school, or that Opp. 23–47 are this same instrument. A contradictory first edition with another year would change the row.

Shared responsibility is part of Chopin publishes the Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op. 52. Naming Frédéric Chopin does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1843-01-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

52, a demonstrated forgery of the cited carrier, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions. If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
