# Julian Fontana serves as Chopin’s Paris copyist and publication agent

Date: 1840

## The fact

Around 1840, and in the years just before Fontana’s 1841 departure for America, Julian Fontana worked in Paris as [Chopin](/people/frederic-chopin)’s copyist, arranger of four-hand versions, and chasing agent for Schlesinger and others, on instructions preserved in Chopin’s letters. Chopin composed; Fontana copied and posted. The row stores the living employment. It does not treat every later disputed Fontana edition as this 1840 desk.

## Context

A composer who hated proofreading still needed clean copies. Fontana, a Warsaw friend already in the emigration, supplied that clerking. Letters tell him which accidentals to check and which publisher to threaten. That is a labour path: skilled copying as paid work in an exile workshop. It is not a claim that Fontana wrote the ballades. Do not treat the posthumous Op. 66–73 cluster as 1840. Do not treat a modern complete-works committee as this friendship. A living copyist who posts accidentals and threats to a publisher is wage labour inside the print chain; leftover mazurkas issued after 1849 are a different desk with a different legal author.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## Evidence and sources

The Institute’s correspondence programme publishes Chopin’s letters to Fontana on copying and sale. Polona independently holds Polish documentary images and prints around the two men. Official: https://chopin.nifc.pl/en. Independent: https://polona.pl/. The records establish the living copyist role. They do not establish a unique later editorial-labour series.

Official or archival record: Fryderyk Chopin Institute — biography and calendar (https://chopin.nifc.pl/en; Narodowy Instytut Fryderyka Chopina).

## Significance

Improving labour path: manuscript skill was paid and organised so print could happen. High confidence on the letters. Modest weight: one copyist is not a labour statute. Posthumous Fontana decisions are explicitly excluded from this date.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Lifetime copyist, not posthumous editor. Do not back-date leftover works. Mixed effects of Julian Fontana serves as Chopin’s Paris copyist and publication agent are separate paths.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Fontana copied and agented for Chopin in Paris in the years around 1840. Not established: that Fontana composed the works, or that his later leftover editions are this employment. A showing that the letters are forged would change the row. A 1855 edition would not.

Shared responsibility is part of Julian Fontana serves as Chopin’s Paris copyist and publication agent. Naming Frédéric Chopin does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1840-01-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

The attached driver is [labour-market-tightness](/drivers/labour-market-tightness). The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
