# Chopin begins composition summers at George Sand’s Nohant

Date: 1839

## The fact

In the summer of 1839, after returning from Majorca and a Marseilles convalescence, [Chopin](/people/frederic-chopin) began the first of a run of composition [summers](/people/larry-summers) at George Sand’s house at Nohant in Berry, returning in most years until 1846. Sand ran the estate; Chopin did not become a French rural official. The row stores the Nohant summers as one health-and-work cluster. It does not mint a twin for each year, and it does not treat a later museum at Nohant as this 1839 arrangement.

## Context

Paris winters meant lessons, smoke, and stairs. Nohant meant a garden, a slower clock, and a house already organised by Sand’s family. Physicians had already named a chronic chest illness; the summer move is a patient-level health instrument, not a hospital statute. The 1847 rupture, stored elsewhere, ends the regime; it is not this first summer. Delacroix’s later visits are guest colour. Do not treat UNESCO or monument lists as 1839. Do not treat every Nohant work (ballades, sonata, barcarolle) as a separate summer Fact; those works have their own print dates. A guest room with a sent-down Pleyel is health capacity only at patient scale: fewer stairs and less smoke than Paris, not a Berry hospital law and not Sand’s title to the land.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## Evidence and sources

The Musée de la Vie romantique’s public pages on Sand’s circle locate Nohant as the working household of the late 1830s–1840s. Britannica independently dates the Sand relationship and the Nohant years. Official: https://www.museevieromantique.paris.fr/en. Independent: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Frederic-Chopin. The records establish the summer regime after 1839. They do not establish a unique later French rural-health series.

## Significance

Improving health-capacity path at patient scale: a chronic invalid worked in a less punishing climate than Paris or Valldemossa. Medium confidence on how much the summers extended his life; high confidence that the summers occurred. Modest weight: a guest room is not a health system. The later family quarrel is a different sign.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Nohant rest is not the 1847 rupture and not a later museum. Mixed effects of Chopin begins composition summers at George Sand’s Nohant are separate paths.

## What is established and what is not

Established: from 1839 Chopin spent working summers at Nohant under Sand’s roof. Not established: a unique survival coefficient, or that every work dated at Nohant is a hospital act. A showing that he never stayed at Nohant in 1839 would change the row. A later house-museum label would not.

Shared responsibility is part of Chopin begins composition summers at George Sand’s Nohant. Naming Frédéric Chopin does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1839-06-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

The attached driver is health-system-capacity. The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
