# Chopin gives a major public concert at the Salle Pleyel on 26 April 1841

Date: 1841

## The fact

On 26 April 1841 [Chopin](/people/frederic-chopin) gave a public concert at the Salle Pleyel after years of preferring private salons, playing his own mature piano works to a packed, paying room. Critics treated it as a return of a composer who had become a rumour in the teaching circuit. Liszt wrote about Chopin’s playing in this period; he did not play this programme. The row stores one night. It does not convert every 1840s salon into extra public concerts.

## Context

By 1841 Chopin’s public was split: pupils and aristocrats heard him weekly; the ticketed public almost never. A single Pleyel night temporarily closed that gap. That is cohesion inside a paying culture, not universal access. The 1848 concert, given as street revolution began, is a different political weather and a different row. Do not treat later complete-works recitals as 1841. Do not treat the piano maker’s later corporate history as the programme. A single packed night does not convert the decade’s salon rule into open-ticket democracy; it only shows that, for one evening, strangers could buy a seat to the same mature pieces.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

## Evidence and sources

Pleyel’s institutional history locates the concert hall practice. Grove / Oxford Music Online independently dates the 26 April 1841 appearance as a major public exception in the teaching years. Official: https://www.pleyel.com/en. Independent: https://www.oxfordmusiconline.com/. The Institute calendar agrees on the date as a finding aid.

Official or archival record: Pleyel — house history and concert rooms (https://www.pleyel.com/en; Pleyel).

## Significance

Improving cohesion path: strangers bought a seat to hear the same mature works in one room. High confidence on the date. Modest weight: one night does not found a public-concert statute. Exclusive salon teaching remains the everyday access rule and is not erased by a single exception.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Chopin played a public Salle Pleyel concert on 26 April 1841. Not established: that 1841 equalised access to his playing, or that 1848 is this same night. A contradictory 1841 playbill with another date would change the row.

The attached driver is [social-cohesion](/drivers/social-cohesion). The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. 1841 is not 1832 and not 16 February 1848. Mixed effects of Chopin gives a major public concert at the Salle Pleyel on 26 April 1841 are separate paths.

Shared responsibility is part of Chopin gives a major public concert at the Salle Pleyel on 26 April 1841. Naming Frédéric Chopin does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1841-04-26 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
