## The fact

In 1847 the household of [Chopin](/people/frederic-chopin) and George Sand collapsed after the marriage of Sand’s daughter Solange to the sculptor Auguste Clésinger and the ensuing family war; Chopin left Nohant for the last time and the correspondence froze into hostility. Delacroix tried to mediate and failed. The row does not treat later biographers’ camps as extra 1847 acts.

## Context

A nine-year working household had produced the Nohant summers and a joint public. Its end split friends, readers, and later memorialists into Sand people and Chopin people.
