# Chopin spends a disastrous winter in the Valldemossa charterhouse with worsening chest disease

Date: 1838

## The fact

From November 1838 into February 1839 [Chopin](/people/frederic-chopin), already chest-sick, wintered with George Sand and her children at the abandoned charterhouse of Valldemossa on Majorca; rain, a delayed piano, and local doctors who treated him as contagious made the stay a medical disaster. Monks and islanders refused ordinary Christian burial cooperation for a companion’s death in the wider trip cluster, which is stored here as religious-medical colour of the same winter, not as a second Fact. Preludes finished there are a different print row. He is the patient who chose the journey, not the bacterium’s author.

## Context

Mediterranean air was a nineteenth-century prescription for consumption. Majorca in 1838 had poor heating, a slow piano crate, and a Catholic community unwilling to treat a consumptive stranger as an ordinary parishioner. Sand’s later Un hiver à Majorque is a literary carrier, not the weather station. Do not treat a later cell-museum ticket as 1838. Do not treat the 1839 prelude print as this infection. Nohant summers are the later offset, not this winter. A Mediterranean prescription that delivered rain, delayed crates, and parish suspicion is still the patient’s chosen journey; the harm path is the winter he actually inhabited, not a later picturesque caption. Sand organised the trip; island doctors named contagion; monks and neighbours set burial terms around the party. Those are one winter, not extra Facts.

## Evidence and sources

The Cartuja de Valldemossa’s institutional history locates the charterhouse and the Chopin-Sand winter as a documented occupation of the cells. Britannica independently dates the 1838–39 Majorca stay and the collapse of Chopin’s health there. Official: https://www.cartoixavalldemossa.com/. Independent: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Frederic-Chopin. The records establish place and winter. They do not establish a unique later island TB series caused by this one household.

## Significance

Worsening infectious-disease path: a travelling consumptive spent months in a damp cell and was treated as a contamination risk. High confidence on the winter, medium on the exact clinical label contemporaries used. Modest weight: one household is not an epidemic curve.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Chopin wintered at Valldemossa in 1838–39 with a worsening chest illness. Not established: a unique transmission count, or that the monks wrote a public-health statute. A showing that he spent that winter in Paris would change the row. A later cell museum would not.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Majorca illness is not the 1839 prelude colophon and not a later charterhouse museum. Mixed effects of Chopin spends a disastrous winter in the Valldemossa charterhouse with worsening chest disease are separate paths.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

The attached driver is infectious-disease-transmission. The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Shared responsibility is part of Chopin spends a disastrous winter in the Valldemossa charterhouse with worsening chest disease. Naming Frédéric Chopin does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1838-12-15 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
