# Chopin gives public Vienna concerts at the Kärntnertortheater

Date: 1829

## The fact

On 11 and 18 August 1829 [Chopin](/people/frederic-chopin) appeared at Vienna’s Kärntnertortheater, playing his Krakowiak rondo and improvising on Polish tunes before a ticketed audience. It is not the 1832 Paris debut and not a later recorded cycle. Reviews in the Viennese press noted the Polish colour of the improvisations. Countess Thun and other patrons helped with introductions; Chopin still had to hire the hall through local management. The row stores the 1829 Vienna nights as one concert cluster. It does not split the two evenings into twin Facts, and it does not treat a modern festival in the Theater an der Wien as this instrument.

## Context

Vienna in 1829 was a post-Congress music market where a Warsaw graduate could test whether Polish dance metres would sell beside Hummel and Moscheles. Chopin travelled with letters, not with a state ensemble. The Kärntnertortheater was a commercial house, not a salon. Shared listening in a ticketed room is the cohesion claim; it is not a claim that 1829 Vienna became a Polish city. Do not confuse these nights with the 1830–31 return to Vienna during the November Uprising, when the same city felt politically colder. Do not treat the later Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde catalogues as the 1829 box office. A ticketed house hearing a Krakowiak and Polish improvisation is shared listening across a language border; it is not a claim that the Hofburg changed policy that August.

The attached driver is [social-cohesion](/drivers/social-cohesion). The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

## Evidence and sources

The Chopin Institute calendar dates the 11 and 18 August 1829 appearances and the repertory. The Cambridge Companion to Chopin independently discusses the Vienna tour as the first foreign public test of the Warsaw works. Official locator: https://chopin.nifc.pl/en (Narodowy Instytut Fryderyka Chopina). Independent locator: https://doi.org/10.1017/ccol9780521404907 (Cambridge University Press). The two records establish occurrence, house, and month. They do not establish ticket totals or a unique later Austrian concert-attendance series caused by those two nights.

## Significance

Improving cohesion path: strangers in a German-speaking capital paid to hear Polish dance improvisation in the same room. High confidence on the dates, medium on the size of the audience. The path is modest. Two evenings do not found a diaspora. Later Chopin societies and competitions are other people’s instruments.

Shared responsibility is part of Chopin gives public Vienna concerts at the Kärntnertortheater. Naming Frédéric Chopin does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1829-08-11 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Chopin played public Vienna concerts on 11 and 18 August 1829 at the Kärntnertortheater. Not established: a unique cohesion coefficient for the Habsburg capital, or that every later ‘Polish night’ in Vienna is this box office. A contradictory playbill with another date would change the row. A twenty-first-century Chopin festival would not.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Vienna 1829 is not Paris 1832. Keep the Kärntnertor playbill on its own night. Mixed effects of Chopin gives public Vienna concerts at the Kärntnertortheater are separate paths.
