# The Wodziński family ends Chopin’s engagement to Maria Wodzińska on class and prudence grounds

Date: 1837

## The fact

In 1835–37 [Chopin](/people/frederic-chopin) courted Maria Wodzińska, with a Dresden and Marienbad passage and an engagement the Wodziński elders treated as provisional; by 1837 the family had broken it off, leaving him with the packet he labelled ‘moja bieda’. Maria’s mother weighed an émigré pianist’s chest illness and lack of a landed post against a daughter of the manor. Chopin did not become a count by playing. The row stores one broken engagement. It does not twin the 1835 meeting and the 1837 refusal as two marriages.

## Context

Polish landowning families in the 1830s still treated marriage as estate strategy. A genius without a manor was a risk, especially after 1831. Letters and the surviving album document the tone; they are not a civil-code article. Do not treat nineteenth-century costume films as 1837. Do not treat a Warsaw museum vitrine of the ‘moja bieda’ envelope as the refusal itself, only as a later carrier of the same papers. A manor family weighing chest illness and lack of land against a daughter is class law in private form; it needs no published edict to be an inequality instrument. The surviving packet labelled ‘moja bieda’ is evidence of the break, not a later museum’s independent act.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Wodzińska is not Sand. Do not twin 1835 and 1837 into two Facts. Mixed effects of The Wodziński family ends Chopin’s engagement to Maria Wodzińska on class and prudence grounds are separate paths.

## Evidence and sources

The Institute’s biographical pages and letter programme date the Wodzińska episode and the 1837 break. Britannica independently reports the engagement’s failure. Official: https://chopin.nifc.pl/en. Independent: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Frederic-Chopin. The records establish courtship and refusal. They do not establish a unique later Polish gini coefficient.

## Significance

Worsening inequality path: manor class closed a door that talent and exile could not reopen. High confidence on the break, medium on any one spoken sentence of the mother. Modest weight: one marriage market is not a tax schedule. Salon teaching fees are a different inequality instrument.

The attached driver is [income-inequality](/drivers/income-inequality). The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

## What is established and what is not

Established: the Wodziński family ended the engagement by 1837. Not established: a unique class-coefficient, or that Maria wrote a public edict. A contradictory 1837 marriage register would change the row. A later biopic would not.

Shared responsibility is part of The Wodziński family ends Chopin’s engagement to Maria Wodzińska on class and prudence grounds. Naming Frédéric Chopin does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1837-07-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.
