# Mass cancellation of civil-society organizations accelerated

Date: 2022

By April 2022, the IACHR reported more than 160 civil-society organizations had lost legal status and warned of a rapid closure of civic and democratic spaces. OHCHR later reported that 1,512 organizations had their legal personality cancelled during 2022 alone by the time of its September Human Rights Council presentation. These actions affected rights groups, development organizations, professional associations and entities linked to churches.
