# Mao orders the People’s Volunteer Army into the Korean War

Date: 1950

## The fact

On 8 October 1950 [Mao Zedong](/people/mao-zedong) issued the order constituting the Chinese People’s Volunteers to enter Korea, after days of Politburo argument and cables with Stalin. Peng Dehuai was appointed commander. Chinese units crossed the Yalu in mid-October. This is a war-entry decision, not the 25 June North Korean attack and not the later armistice. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

## Context

Kim Il-sung had started the war with Soviet support. US and UN forces had reached the Yalu approaches. Some Chinese leaders feared US invasion; others feared a ruinous war. [Stalin](/people/joseph-stalin)’s conditions on air cover shifted. Zhou handled diplomacy. Sharing the file with Stalin, Kim, and Peng does not delete Mao’s order. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

Shared responsibility is part of Mao orders the People’s Volunteer Army into the Korean War. Naming Mao Zedong does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1950-10-08 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

## Evidence and sources

The Wilson Center Digital Archive publishes Mao–Stalin–Kim traffic and related notes. Britannica independently dates Chinese intervention to October 1950. No Factrail original killed-in-action census is offered. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

## Significance

Worsening humanitarian path of a large war. Complex contribution. High confidence on the order date; medium on any single casualty total. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Mao ordered PVA entry on 8 October 1950 after a Politburo process. Not established: that he planned the 25 June invasion, or a unique death total. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Do not treat Mao as the sole author of 25 June 1950. Do not treat Peng’s field command as a second Mao Fact. Mixed effects of Mao orders the People’s Volunteer Army into the Korean War are separate paths.

The attached driver is [humanitarian-access](/drivers/humanitarian-access). The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.
