# The Zunyi Conference elevates Mao during the Long March

Date: 1935

## The fact

In mid-January 1935, during the Red Army’s retreat from Jiangxi, an enlarged Politburo meeting at Zunyi criticized the previous field command and elevated [Mao Zedong](/people/mao-zedong)’s military voice. The Long March as a whole ran from October 1934 to late 1935. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

## Context

Encirclement had broken the soviet. Otto Braun and Bo Gu were the field line being displaced. Zhang Wentian took the general secretaryship in the usual reconstruction; Mao did not become a modern head of state at Zunyi. Civilians along the route paid in requisition and battle. Those costs are not cancelled by the party’s survival. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

## Evidence and sources

Britannica’s Long March article dates the 1934–35 retreat and the Zunyi meeting. Mao’s December 1935 Wayaobu report is a post-Zunyi political text. Independent military histories disagree on exact attendance minutes; they agree that Mao’s intra-party rank rose. No Factrail body count of the March is offered. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

## Significance

Improving cohesion for the party-army as an organization. Weight is bounded because the March was also a humanitarian disaster for many localities, stored only as context here, not as a twin Fact. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Zunyi in January 1935 marked Mao’s rise inside the retreating CCP. Not established: that he already held later chairmanship titles, or a unique survival rate. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Do not convert the March into a tourism route. Do not invent a casualty census. Mixed effects of The Zunyi Conference elevates Mao during the Long March are separate paths.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

The attached driver is [social-cohesion](/drivers/social-cohesion). The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Shared responsibility is part of The Zunyi Conference elevates Mao during the Long March. Naming Mao Zedong does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1935-01-15 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
