# Nixon meets Mao in Beijing and the Shanghai Communiqué follows

Date: 1972

## The fact

On 21 February 1972 Richard Nixon met [Mao Zedong](/people/mao-zedong) at Mao’s residence in Beijing. The visit, prepared by Kissinger’s secret 1971 trip, produced the Shanghai Communiqué of 28 February: a US–PRC statement on Taiwan, opposition to hegemony, and a path to diplomatic relations. Mao’s few hours in the room were the Chinese political authorisation. Zhou handled the text. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

## Context

The Sino-Soviet split and the Vietnam War made a triangular opening useful to both sides. Domestic Cultural Revolution politics still raged; the visit did not restore Liu Shaoqi or end campaigns. Human-rights language was absent. Sharing the file with Nixon, Kissinger, and Zhou is mandatory. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Do not treat the visit as a human-rights settlement. Do not twin it with UN 2758. Mixed effects of Nixon meets Mao in Beijing and the Shanghai Communiqué follows are separate paths.

## Evidence and sources

The US Office of the Historian milestone page publishes the official US record of rapprochement. Britannica independently dates the visit and communiqué. FRUS China volumes publish the memcons. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

## Significance

Improving polarization path (weakening a US–PRC cold war). Complex. High confidence. It does not wash 1958 or 1966. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

The attached driver is [political-polarization](/drivers/political-polarization). The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Nixon met Mao on 21 February 1972 and the Shanghai Communiqué followed. Not established: that the visit liberalized the PRC, or that Mao wrote the communiqué clauses. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

Shared responsibility is part of Nixon meets Mao in Beijing and the Shanghai Communiqué follows. Naming Mao Zedong does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1972-02-21 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.
