# Mao reviews Red Guards in Tiananmen and authorizes mass violence

Date: 1966

## The fact

On 18 August 1966 [Mao Zedong](/people/mao-zedong) reviewed hundreds of thousands of Red Guards in Tiananmen Square, wearing an armband and signalling that student rebellion had his authority. His 5 August poster ‘Bombard the Headquarters’ had already named the party apparatus as the target. August–September brought beatings, ‘house raids’, killings of teachers, and the Daxing and other massacres. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

## Context

Work teams sent by Liu and Deng in June were withdrawn as ‘suppressing the students’. The Eleventh Plenum’s Sixteen Points blessed rebellion. Local committees sometimes tried to limit killing and were themselves overthrown. The PLA later imposed military control — another phase, not a twin Fact. Jiang Qing’s cultural group agitated; Mao’s review was the public licence. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

The contribution type is direct. The attached driver is [humanitarian-access](/drivers/humanitarian-access). The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

## Evidence and sources

The 5 August poster is a published Mao text. Independent photographic and documentary holdings at the Library of Congress record Red Guard mobilizations. Britannica’s Cultural Revolution article independently describes the 18 August rally and subsequent violence. No Factrail original death total is offered. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

Official or archival record: Mao, Bombard the Headquarters — my big-character poster, 5 August 1966 (https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/mao/selected-works/volume-9/mswv9_03.htm; Marxists Internet Archive).

## Significance

Worsening humanitarian path of high weight. Direct contribution. High confidence on authorization; medium on any one massacre’s count. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

Shared responsibility is part of Mao reviews Red Guards in Tiananmen and authorizes mass violence. Naming Mao Zedong does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1966-08-18 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Mao reviewed Red Guards on 18 August 1966 after calling to bombard the headquarters, and mass violence followed. Not established: a unique national 1966 body count in this catalog. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Do not treat the August rally as the May 16 Circular. Do not invent a Red Guard death census. Mixed effects of Mao reviews Red Guards in Tiananmen and authorizes mass violence are separate paths.
