# The CCP–KMT Second United Front against Japan is publicly announced

Date: 1937

## The fact

On 22 September 1937 the KMT published the CCP’s declaration of cooperation, and the Communists published a matching united-front statement: the Red Army would be redesignated, a civil-war truce was proclaimed, and both claimed resistance to Japan. [Mao Zedong](/people/mao-zedong) had already shifted the party line after Xi’an. This is a coalition instrument, not a dissolution of either party. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

## Context

Japan’s full-scale invasion after 7 July 1937 made a two-front Chinese war suicidal for both parties. The Xi’an Incident of December 1936 had forced Chiang to negotiate. Zhou Enlai handled much of the contact. Mao kept the army’s command autonomy. The later New Fourth Army incident shows the truce was incomplete. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## Evidence and sources

Britannica’s Xi’an Incident article frames the 1937 united front. Mao’s 1937 resistance texts are official party line. Independent diplomatic histories add Soviet pressure. The September publications are the dated public carriers, not a peace treaty deposited at Geneva. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

## Significance

Improving cohesion path at national-resistance scale, complex and temporary. It does not wash Jiangxi or later civil-war Facts. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Do not treat 1937 as the end of CCP–KMT killing. New Fourth Army 1941 is a later cluster. Mixed effects of The CCP–KMT Second United Front against Japan is publicly announced are separate paths.

## What is established and what is not

Established: a public CCP–KMT united-front declaration appeared in September 1937 with Mao as CCP leader. Not established: that intra-Chinese killing stopped, or that Mao became Chiang’s subordinate. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

Shared responsibility is part of The CCP–KMT Second United Front against Japan is publicly announced. Naming Mao Zedong does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1937-09-22 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

The attached driver is [social-cohesion](/drivers/social-cohesion). The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
