# Mao launches the Yan’an Rectification Movement

Date: 1942

## The fact

On 1 February 1942 [Mao Zedong](/people/mao-zedong) delivered ‘Rectify the Party’s Style of Work’ at Yan’an, opening a movement that required cadres to study his writings, confess errors, and denounce ‘subjectivism, sectarianism, and stereotyped writing’. The Rescue Campaign under Kang Sheng added detention and coerced confession. Wang Shiwei was singled out and later killed. This is intra-party coercion, not Kangda classroom work. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

## Context

The base was blockaded. Returned students from Moscow and writers from the coast were the named targets. Mao’s 1942–43 talks on literature at Yan’an Forum are part of the same line, not a separate Fact. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

## Evidence and sources

The 1 February 1942 speech is in Selected Works. Britannica independently summarises the Rectification Movement. Gao Hua’s later archival reconstruction (used here only as independent historiography, not as a primary file) describes Kang Sheng’s methods. No original prisoner census is invented. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

## Significance

Worsening polarization path inside the only organized left in the base. Direct contribution: Mao wrote and opened the movement. High confidence on the speech date; medium on the full detention tally. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Mao opened rectification on 1 February 1942 and made his texts the standard. Not established: that every later Cultural Revolution practice was already present, or a complete victim list. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The CCP, State Council, PLA, and local cadres may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every local killing as his handwriting.

The contribution type is direct. The attached driver is [political-polarization](/drivers/political-polarization). The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Do not treat rectification as a seminar. Do not merge it with the 1966 Cultural Revolution. Mixed effects of Mao launches the Yan’an Rectification Movement are separate paths.

Shared responsibility is part of Mao launches the Yan’an Rectification Movement. Naming Mao Zedong does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1942-02-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
