# Archaeology and museums publish Qin standardised weights, measures and script as a set

Date: 1975

## The fact

Qin policy standardised weights, measures, axle-gauges and small-seal/clerical script. This Fact is dated to the modern public archaeological-museum presentation of that policy as a set (weights inscribed with edicts; script reform in the received account). The First Emperor did not curate a 1970s case.

## Context

Standard metrology is an administrative public good and a tool of extraction. Both can be true. Script unification later enabled imperial paperwork and, much later, a shared written language. Lag into literacy is centuries.

[Qin Shi Huang](/people/qin-shi-huang) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Mausoleum museum displays and Met Qin essays independently describe the standardisation package.

Official or archival record: Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum (https://www.bmy.com.cn/; Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum).

## Significance

Knowledge/administration access path. High confidence on the policy existing in the record.

A weight inscribed with an edict is not a school system. Keep the lag.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Qin standardised script and metrology in the received and archaeological record. Not established: a literacy rate for 220 BCE.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
