# UNESCO lists the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor as World Heritage

## The fact

In 1987 UNESCO inscribed the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, including the terracotta pits, on the World Heritage List. The listing is a completed conservation-policy act. It does not open the unexcavated tumulus.

## Context

Listing creates duties and a global tourist frame. The tumulus remains largely unexcavated because of conservation risk and mercury reports in Shiji. Both caution and spectacle are real.

[Qin Shi Huang](/people/qin-shi-huang) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
