# Constantinian law as later coded still treats slave property as a normal fiscal and household form

Date: 334

## The fact

Constitutions transmitted under Constantine’s name regulate, punish, and occasionally ease slavery; they do not abolish it. The dated public instrument is that slave-property continuity in the later codes.

It is one event.

## Context

No fourth-century emperor abolished slavery. The path is still inequality: a Christian court that leaves the property form standing.

[Constantine the Great](/people/constantine-the-great)’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below. Sharing a field with them is not a reason to drop a documented act, and it is not a reason to assign later consequences done in the name after death.

Manumission in churches is a separate limited offset. The codes still assume slaves. Dated via later compilation of his constitutions.
Named person as heading of the dated public instrument. Later editors, museums, printers, or offices share publication. Complex where later carriers date the row.

## Evidence and sources

Grenoble Roman-law pages and Cambridge independently show slave constitutions in the Constantinian cluster.

Official or archival record: Roman law texts including Codex Theodosianus extracts — Grenoble (https://droitromain.univ-grenoble-alpes.fr/; Université Grenoble Alpes / Droit romain).

## Significance

Leaving human property intact while privileging a church is an inequality path of medium confidence.

Silence on abolition is not Nicaea.

Leaving human property intact while privileging a church is an inequality path of medium confidence.

## What is established and what is not

Established: codes preserve Constantinian slave law, not abolition. Not established: a unique household headcount.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.

Established here: a sourced, dated public instrument with a named contribution by Constantine the Great.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date, signatory, or non-occurrence; a demonstrated forgery; or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of other causes.

They are not a public rating.
