Britannica prints late-August 1608 arrest, Fort St Angelo imprisonment, escape, and 1 December 1608 defrocking after a brawl in which a knight was wounded. Legend of a dramatic hole in the wall is not upgraded beyond the documented escape. The Order’s council headed the expulsion.
