# Prussia annexes Hanover, Hesse-Kassel, Nassau, and Frankfurt

Date: 1866

## The fact

On 20 September 1866 a Prussian law annexed the Kingdom of Hanover, Electorate of Hesse, Duchy of Nassau, and the Free City of Frankfurt, whose governments had sided against Prussia. Bismarck chose annexation in the north while sparing the southern states and Austria. Dynasties were deposed; Frankfurt’s independence ended. This is a displacement-of-polities Fact, not Königgrätz itself. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The Reichstag, Wilhelm I, Moltke, Roon, and state administrations may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every regiment’s act as his handwriting.

## Context

Some Prussian conservatives wanted more; some liberals wanted less force. The Guelph fund later used Hanoverian royal property. Local officials were sworn to Prussia. Populations were not asked in a referendum. Austria’s exclusion is the Prague row. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The Reichstag, Wilhelm I, Moltke, Roon, and state administrations may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every regiment’s act as his handwriting.

The contribution type is direct. The attached driver is [forced-displacement-scale](/drivers/forced-displacement-scale). The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

## Evidence and sources

GHDI publishes annexation documents. DHM independently narrates Prussian territorial expansion after 1866. Britannica’s Seven Weeks’ War article independently lists the annexed states. The URLs differ. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The Reichstag, Wilhelm I, Moltke, Roon, and state administrations may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every regiment’s act as his handwriting.

## Significance

Worsening forced-displacement path at the level of states and civic identities. Direct contribution. High confidence on the statute. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The Reichstag, Wilhelm I, Moltke, Roon, and state administrations may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every regiment’s act as his handwriting.

Shared responsibility is part of Prussia annexes Hanover, Hesse-Kassel, Nassau, and Frankfurt. Naming Otto von Bismarck does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1866-09-20 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Prussia annexed Hanover, Hesse-Kassel, Nassau, and Frankfurt in September 1866 under Bismarck’s policy. Not established: a household-level refugee total. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The Reichstag, Wilhelm I, Moltke, Roon, and state administrations may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every regiment’s act as his handwriting.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Do not treat annexation as the Prague peace. Do not invent a refugee census. Mixed effects of Prussia annexes Hanover, Hesse-Kassel, Nassau, and Frankfurt are separate paths.
