# Prussia goes to war with Austria; Königgrätz decides the German question

Date: 1866

## The fact

On 14 June 1866 the German Confederation voted federal execution against Prussia; Prussian troops moved, and on 3 July Moltke’s armies won at Königgrätz (Sadowa). Bismarck had prepared alliance with Italy, a crisis over Holstein, and a rupture of the Confederation. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The Reichstag, Wilhelm I, Moltke, Roon, and state administrations may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every regiment’s act as his handwriting.

## Context

The Gastein condominium had failed. Liberal nationalists were split. Wilhelm hesitated; Bismarck threatened resignation. Moltke’s railways and needle gun were the military mechanism. Bismarck then restrained annexation of Austrian territory — a peace choice stored next, not here. Dead of the Bohemian campaign are a humanitarian cost of unification-by-war. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The Reichstag, Wilhelm I, Moltke, Roon, and state administrations may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every regiment’s act as his handwriting.

## Evidence and sources

GHDI publishes 1866 war documents. Britannica independently dates the Seven Weeks’ War and Königgrätz. Austrian and Prussian official histories independently reconstruct the battle. No Factrail original killed-in-action series is offered. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The Reichstag, Wilhelm I, Moltke, Roon, and state administrations may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every regiment’s act as his handwriting.

## Significance

Worsening humanitarian path. Complex (Moltke, Wilhelm, Bismarck). High confidence on political authorship of the war. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The Reichstag, Wilhelm I, Moltke, Roon, and state administrations may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every regiment’s act as his handwriting.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Prussia fought Austria in June–July 1866 with Bismarck as the political author of the rupture. Not established: a unique body count, or that he directed battery fire at Chlum. Later museums, competitions, UNESCO lists, and translations are not this Fact. The Reichstag, Wilhelm I, Moltke, Roon, and state administrations may share the file; they do not erase a documented decision, and they are not a licence to treat every regiment’s act as his handwriting.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Do not twin the war with the Prague peace or the North German Confederation constitution. Mixed effects of Prussia goes to war with Austria; Königgrätz decides the German question are separate paths.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

The attached driver is [humanitarian-access](/drivers/humanitarian-access). The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Shared responsibility is part of Prussia goes to war with Austria; Königgrätz decides the German question. Naming Otto von Bismarck does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1866-06-14 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
