# Nord Stream 2 shareholder agreement is signed with chancellery backing

On 4 September 2015 Gazprom and European firms signed the Nord Stream 2 shareholder deal. [Merkel](/people/angela-merkel)’s governments treated it as a commercial project and resisted US extra-territorial sanctions. Construction later finished; certification was halted in 2022.
