# EPP sanctions Deutsch over Gestapo comparison

In December 2020 the EPP Group stripped Fidesz MEP [Tamás Deutsch](/people/tamas-deutsch) of speaking and office rights after he compared [Manfred Weber](/people/manfred-weber)'s remarks on the rule-of-law mechanism to the Gestapo and Hungary's communist secret police; he was not expelled. In a vote on 16 December the group also removing him as vice-chair of the budgetary control committee.
