# The 293 tetrarchy creates a four-emperor college as a succession-and-defence design

Date: 293

## The fact

On 1 March 293 [Diocletian](/people/diocletian) and Maximian took Constantius and Galerius as Caesars, a four-ruler college meant to cover frontiers and succession.

It is one event.

## Context

The design failed in 306 (worsening). For 293–305 it is still a copyable colleague-system against a single civil-war magnet. Medium confidence on welfare sign.

Diocletian’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below. Sharing a field with them is not a reason to drop a documented act, and it is not a reason to assign later consequences done in the name after death.

1 March 293 Constantius and Galerius Caesars. Same year-cluster as ceremonial. Design versus sacralisation: split signs.
Named person as heading of the dated public instrument. Later editors, museums, printers, or offices share publication. Complex where later carriers date the row.

## Evidence and sources

Britannica tetrarch and Cambridge independently date 293 and describe the college as a defence/succession machine.

Official or archival record: Livius — Diocletian (https://www.livius.org/articles/person/diocletian/; Livius.org).

## Significance

A four-ruler frontier college is a limited resilience path while it held.

A college is not an edict against churches.

A four-ruler frontier college is a limited resilience path while it held.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 293 Caesars created a tetrarchy. Not established: that it would have held after 305 if sons had been included.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.

Established here: a sourced, dated public instrument with a named contribution by Diocletian.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date, signatory, or non-occurrence; a demonstrated forgery; or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of other causes.

They are not a public rating.
