# Poor Folk appears in Nekrasov’s Petersburg Collection, January 1846

Date: 1846

## The fact

In January 1846 Nikolai Nekrasov’s Petersburg Collection printed Bednye lyudi (Poor Folk), Dostoyevsky’s first novel, an exchange of letters between a clerk and a young woman on the edge of sale. Day-level mid-January 1846 is the conventional issue neighbourhood; no unique kiosk tally is invented.

## Context

Belinsky’s praise made a reputation; that praise is his act, stored only as context. Shared with Nekrasov. The novel’s pity for poor city people is an education-in-feeling path, not a ministry. The Double, the same year’s other book, is a different instrument.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## Evidence and sources

Goslitmuz at https://www.goslitmuz.ru/ is the Russian state literary-museum neighbourhood of the manuscripts and first editions. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Fyodor-Dostoyevsky independently dates Poor Folk to 1846. Gutenberg author page at https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/314 locates later English carriers.

Official or archival record: State Museum of the History of Russian Literature (Goslitmuz) (https://www.goslitmuz.ru/; Vladimir Dahl State Literary Museum).

## Significance

A first novel about clerks and a threatened girl is an education path of high confidence and modest weight. It is not a unique poverty series. Mixed: pity can freeze the poor as objects.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Poor Folk is not The Double and not House of the Dead. Mixed effects of Poor Folk appears in Nekrasov’s Petersburg Collection, January 1846 are separate paths.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Poor Folk published January 1846. Not established: a unique sales coefficient. Distinct from The Double. Shared responsibility is part of Poor Folk appears in Nekrasov’s Petersburg Collection, January 1846. Naming Fyodor Dostoyevsky does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1846-01-15 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
