# SEC adopts climate-risk disclosure rules for public companies

On 6 March 2024 the [U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission](/organizations/econ-org-us-sec) adopted rules requiring public companies to disclose specified material climate-related risks and, for some filers, certain greenhouse-gas emissions. The rules were challenged, and on 27 March 2025 the SEC voted to end its defense of them. This record separates the documented adoption from its later legal status.
