# The Amarna letters enter the scholarly record after the 1887 find

Date: 1887

## The fact

In 1887 local finds at Amarna brought a cuneiform diplomatic archive into European and Egyptian collections, later edited as the Amarna letters. The archive documents the reign in which [Nefertiti](/people/nefertiti) was Great Royal Wife. She is not the author of the tablets.

## Context

Great-power letters about gifts, troops, and gold sit beside temple scenes of the royal couple. The letters complicate any purely domestic religious story. Attribution of policy to Nefertiti from these tablets would be an upgrade.

Nefertiti is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Museum catalogues and the Met Amarna essay independently frame the letters.

Official or archival record: British Museum collection (Amarna letter holdings) (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection; British Museum).

## Significance

Low-confidence transparency/knowledge path. Do not treat as her signature.

An archive can reduce myth. It cannot be rewritten as her diary.

## What is established and what is not

Established: the Amarna letters entered scholarship after 1887. Not established: that Nefertiti dictated them.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
