# The Amarna diplomatic archive does not treat Nefertiti as a corresponding great king

Date: 1344

## The fact

The Amarna letters, recovered in 1887 and written in the reign, address the Egyptian king, not [Nefertiti](/people/nefertiti) as a great-king peer. It bounds claims of co-rule.

## Context

Reliefs can show a queen smiting or officiating while letters still go to one male king. Both sources should be kept. Using only reliefs inflates her diplomatic power. Using only letters erases her ritual office.

Nefertiti is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Museum tablet collections and the Met essay independently describe the archive’s royal addressee.

Official or archival record: British Museum — Amarna letters (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection; British Museum).

## Significance

A limit-path, stored as worsening for concentrated kingship rather than as an insult to her.

Silence in tablets is not absence from the court. Do not convert it into non-existence.

## What is established and what is not

Established: the surviving letters do not treat her as a corresponding great king. Not established: that she had no internal political weight.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
