# The Amarna court elevates exclusive Aten cult with Nefertiti as officiant

## The fact

In the Amarna years the court elevated Aten as the exclusive public cult, with [Nefertiti](/people/nefertiti) repeatedly carved as officiant opposite Akhenaten. Conventional dating uses the mid-1340s BCE.

## Context

Temple economies of Amun were political machines. Closing or starving them polarised elites. Nefertiti’s prominence in Aten ritual is why she is a complex contributor rather than a decorative spouse. Co-regency theories remain theories.

Nefertiti is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
