# Museum and press captions reduce Nefertiti to a modern beauty standard

Date: 1924

## The fact

From the 1924 public display onward, German and international press repeatedly captioned the bust as an ideal of feminine beauty, often omitting Aten cult, titulary, and the uninscribed status of the object.

## Context

Beauty captions sold tickets and flattened a political-religious career. Later feminist art history reversed some of that. The reversal is a separate improving essay path.

[Nefertiti](/people/nefertiti) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

SMB still negotiates ‘most beautiful’ language in visitor materials. Britannica’s biography leads with queenship, a contrast.

Official or archival record: Staatliche Museen zu Berlin — Neues Museum (https://www.smb.museum/en/museums-institutions/neues-museum/home.html; SMB / Neues Museum).

## Significance

Representational rights path. Medium confidence.

A press cliché is not her ideology. Do not write ‘Nefertiti believed in beauty’ from a 1925 newspaper.

## What is established and what is not

Established: modern captions emphasised beauty over office. Not established: that ancient viewers used the same caption.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
