# Zahi Hawass’s SCA campaign demands return of the Nefertiti bust

Date: 2003

## The fact

In the 2000s, with a peak of public statements around 2003–2009, Egypt’s then Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Zahi Hawass, demanded the return of the bust. The campaign is a completed public diplomatic act. It did not move the object. Non-success does not erase the demand as a Fact.

## Context

Restitution politics uses a famous face as a state symbol. Germany answered with legal title and conservation arguments. The Guardian’s 2009 reporting records both sides around the Neues Museum opening.

[Nefertiti](/people/nefertiti) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Egyptian official heritage pages and Guardian reporting independently document the demand. They disagree on outcome; they agree a demand was made.

Official or archival record: Egypt Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities — monuments (https://egymonuments.gov.eg/; Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, Egypt).

## Significance

Accountability path. Medium confidence. Improving because a public claim is on the record, not because the bust moved.

A failed restitution campaign is still a dated act. Do not store it as a return.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Egypt publicly demanded return in the 2000s. Not established: that demand created a justiciable German court order.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
